Through the generosity of parishioners and a number of fund raising events in 2009 we managed to send a total of £6149.92 to support projects in Zambia. As part of this total, £2000 was sent to support two seminarians and a further £3442 was sent to the Kassisi orphanage and Sr. Maria’s homes and school. None of this could have been possible without the continued support, social gatherings and collections for special events.

This year already has seen £442.50 from our crib collection, over £400 from our Darts Night in March, a Lenten lunch, £160 from a Sunday afternoon cream tea at the end of May and £645 from our Italian evening on 10 July.

No injuries were sustained on the Darts Night apart from a few marks to the plasterwork in the hall. Whilst Eric Bristow and co. have nothing to worry about, some parishioners amazed some of us by managing to finish on doubles on the board.

The Lent lunch for Zambia was part of a series of lunches held by local Christian churches and was well supported. The simple lunch of homemade soup, bread and fruit was enjoyed by members from the local Christian communities coming together on Palm Sunday.

Father Oswald’s weekend visit at Pentecost was to thank us and to give us a first hand account of the work we support. After the Vigil Mass on the Saturday and the parish Mass on the Sunday we were able to chat with him and get further feedback. Father Oswald is going to the University of East Anglia in Norwich in September to continue his studies, so hopefully we will see him sometime in the future.

The cream tea on 30 May was enjoyed by everyone who came along and held pleasant surprises for some whose numbers were pulled out of the boxes for the 200 club half yearly big draw.

The Italian evening was held in the parish hall on a balmy night in July. Over 45 parishioners and friends were treated to a delicious four course meal prepared by Maria Amesbury and Father Christopher. We were welcomed with glasses of Pimms or fruit cup followed by antipasti, primi, secondi and dolci courses with wine and soft drinks.

More events are planned after our Summer break.

30th May 2010 – Trinity Sunday (Year C)

THIS SUNDAY: This Sunday is all about the “Divine Community” – in other words, the way in which our God is in himself a communion of love: Father, Son and Spirit, distinct yet perfectly united – three persons, one God. We hear of the perfect union between Father and Son, revealed in the mysterious poem of the First Reading, where the Son is “Wisdom” joining the Father in the act of creation. This union bears fruit in the Spirit, who pours this perfect love into our hearts, so that we may imitate the “Communion of Love” by living together and hoping for our place within the Divine Community.

A VERY WARM WELCOME to Fr Oswald Mallya. Fr Oswald is one of our valued contacts in Zambia and is studying in Kent on a sabbatical. Fr Oswald was the priest of the St Lawrence Community Project that we, as a parish, have been supporting in simple ways over the last two years. He is visiting us this weekend and he will be with us at both Masses that weekend and so tell us how what we have sent out has been used for the community on the outskirts of Lusaka. There will be a little drink after Mass on Saturday in the Narthex giving you chance to say hello to Fr Oswald whilst he is here with us. On Sunday, you can meet him in the hall for coffee after Mass.

FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION: The period of preparation has come to an end for another year and 26 children from our parish come to receive Holy Communion for the first time this coming Saturday at 12noon. The rehearsal for FHC is on Friday 4th June at 5.00pm in the Church. The whole group join us for mass next Sunday at 10.30am where they come also to receive their certificates. Let’s keep them in our prayers over this next week: Ellena Trickey, Ellis Gould, Taylor Kabuye, Bonitta Nakitto, Kelvin Kalungi, Alfie Condon, Ciaran Jones, Niall McGirr, Yasmin McDonald, Jade Osborne, Charley O’Toole, Oskar Kleszcz, Jacob Hynes. Michal Komada, Finlay O’Regan, Leah Holland, Rico Russo, Luca Mercato, Carlo Mercato, Jessica James, Jack Phillips, Lauren Sanders, Isobel Heard, Oliver Murphy, Ben McGovern, and Paddy Browne.

CORPUS CHRISTI: 6 June this year is the celebration of Corpus Christi. There will be, as we have done in previous years, sung Vespers at 4.00pm followed by a procession of the Blessed Sacrament with benediction ‘over’ Whitchurch, praying for the people of our city and our area. Please do come along if you can. This is a beautiful feast and chance for us to renew our faith in Christ’s living presence among us.

PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT FUND: By the end of this year there will be 39 priests living in retirement. The annual collection seeks our support in offering them a little security after many years of active service to the people of Clifton, many of whom continue (like Fr Michael) to support us in so many ways. The report for 2009 will be given out this weekend along with Gift Aid envelopes for those of you who pay tax. The collection should be taken this weekend but with the papal visit appeal last weekend it seems to be more prudent to leave it a week. Saturday 5/Sunday 6 June. Please be as generous as you can towards our retired priests.

YEAR FOR PRIESTS: Bishop Declan invites you to join him at the close of this Year for Priests at the Cathedral on Friday 11 June (Feast of the Sacred Heart) at 11.00am. He will be joined by many of the priests of our diocese to bring this spiritual year to a prayerful close. There’s plenty of room in the Cathedral so please do go along and join our Bishop and our priests.

PARISH BAZAAR: Our Bazaar takes place, this year, on Saturday 9th October. Details of how you can help in the weeks and months leading up to it will be given out next weekend… so watch this space. You might like to think about what you might be able to let one of the stalls have. Bottles, cakes, jams and chutneys, fancy goods and gifts, bric-a-brac and toys… now’s the time to start thinking. Details of stalls and stall holders will also be on the notice board THIS COMING week so you can contact the appropriate person.

200 CLUB SOCIAL: Cream Tea will be served this Sunday afternoon – Sunday 30th May – from 3.30pm until 5.30pm. Sandwiches, scones with cream and jam as well as cakes will be served along with lashings of hot, fresh tea. Tea will cost £3 and you can sign up in the narthex and simply come along any time during that couple of hours. The three May ‘big’ prizes (first prize £200) will be drawn during the afternoon at 4.30pm… and it could be your number! Do come along if you can.

GLASTONBURY PILGRIMAGE: The annual diocesan pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady at Glastonbury is taking place on Sunday 11 July. This is a great gathering of the people of our diocese in honour of the Mother of God… and it is always a good day out, too. Fr Healy is arranging a coach from St Pius X and is prepared to call in at St Bernadette’s to pick up those who would like to join with them. The coach will leave St B’s and take you to Glastonbury. If you would like to go along, please sign up on the notice board.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION: Fr Christopher paid a visit to the secondary school last week inviting those in year 8 and above who would like to embark upon the preparation for Confirmation to sign up. The Bishop will be with us after Christmas and preparation will begin after the summer holidays. If you would like to take part in this year’s programme have a look at our website or get in touch with FrC asap.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bernard and Valerie Price who successfully completed the diocesan Certificate in Catechesis which was awarded to them by Bishop Declan on 19 May.

THE DIARY OF GOD: John Huntriss is leading a course spread over eight weeks during the autumn on the scriptures taking us gently through the story of God and his love for his people and enabling us to deepen our understanding of the Word of God. Full details and application forms for the course (which is taking place here at St Bernadette’s) can be found in the narthex. The eight week’s course costs £24. It is a most valuable course and well worthwhile signing up for, Do pick up one of the forms and if you want to know more, have a word with FrC. You can hand your form into FrC or send it onto the Adult education office. Poster on the notice board.

PAPAL VISIT COLLECTION: Thank you for the great generosity you showed through last weekend’s retiring collection as part of our support for the Holy Father’s visit in September. You raised a superb £398.36 thanks to your kindness and this will be sent on with the Gift Aid forms only to enhance your gifts. If you haven’t done so yet, please pick up one of the prayer cards from the Narthex.

Parish Outreach is part of the St. Bernadette family that aims to bring all parish members together to bring love and hope to others locally, nationally and internationally through practising our faith in our daily lives. By reaching out to others through personal involvement, giving, prayers and encouragement the parish family supports many different charitable, ecumenical and social activities.

The many outreach activities in our parish include our involvement through Amplius the ecumenical group of local churches, support for the Julian Trust and the Ministry of the Door at St. Nicholas of Tolentino, our links with Cafod, Missio (formerly the APF), the HCPT, Traidcraft, Samaritans Purse shoebox presents from our youth club, our support for projects in Zambia and our prayer links.

Awareness of the needs of others has prompted action by many parishioners. We enjoy many social events, themed evenings and meals prepared by our Italian, Malaysian and Indian parishioners. Money raised from these events supports local and overseas projects.

Together with other local churches we hold weekly lunches during Lent, a Good Friday walk of witness and a Christmas concert.

Our links with Cafod are strengthened through our Family Fast days and our pyramid box donations during Lent. The Cafod national and diocesan organisers keep in regular contact informing us of events in the diocese and overseas.

Support for building and aid projects in Zambia is co-ordinated through the Papal Nuncio to Zambia, Monsignor Girasoli and local priests and religious.

Through the weekly prayer list of intercessions posted at St. Joseph’s statue in the church we remember the needs of those in our parish and the wider world. Parishioners are invited to add their special intentions to the list so that all the parish can support them in our prayers.

The work of the different groups in the parish is supported by representatives meeting together regularly. Our parish contacts are :

Zambia projects – Fr. Christopher and Maria Amesbury

Cafod – Linda and Gordon Hodgson

Missio – Judith Lavelle

HCPT – Maureen Case

Traidcraft – Marie Forester

Amplius – Gerry Panter and Mike Forde

Samaritans Purse – Youth Club

At present we are collecting groceries for the Julian Trust and gifts and donations for the Samaritans Purse appeal as well as meeting together with other local churches in a community choir to prepare for our Amplius Christmas concert.

Events during Advent include the Amplius Christmas concert in St. Bernadettes school hall on Friday December 4th and a quiz night with fish and chip supper in the parish hall on Saturday December 5th.

We are always looking for new ideas and our Outreach group would welcome suggestions from parish members in addition to the generosity, prayers and support we already receive.

Nothing could have prepared us for our first visit, Mother Theresa’s hospice for terminally sick people with HIV and AIDS. The Mother Superior led us inside their home, into a courtyard where hundreds of little children with smiling faces were gathered singing “welcome, welcome…”

After a 10-hour flight we finally got to Lusaka, at 6 am. His Excellency Mons Girasoli, Papal Nuncio for Zambia e Malawi, met us at the airport with the official car, flying the unmistakable Vatican Flag.

This was our first encounter with Africa: a beautiful dawn, long lines of people walking to work, children holding hands in pristine uniforms, walking to school.

A short drive brought us to the Vatican embassy; a big white marbled house with a luscious, colourful garden. We were shown to our rooms, they were filled with fresh flowers and fruit, bottled water and drinks… then the white mosquito net hanging over the bed reminded me of where I was.

On our desk we found our very busy schedule for the week, the visits to some of the projects supported by Mons Girasoli: Mother Theresa’s hospice, The City of Hope, Kasisi orphanage, Saint Lawrence Community School, Chirundu orphanage.

There was no time to lose, on the first day Mons Girasoli took us to the brand new Catholic Cathedral, modern and imposing. The Anglican Cathedral was older, and boasted a very important organ. A plaque on the wall informed us that the dioceses of Bath and Wells had donated some money.

Nothing could have prepared us for our first visit, Mother Theresa’s hospice for terminally sick people with HIV and AIDS. The Mother Superior led us inside their home, into a courtyard where hundreds of little children with smiling faces were gathered singing “welcome, welcome…” It was overwhelming, I looked at Father Christopher for strength and courage but he was also visibly touched, tears falling down his face. The children sang, they performed little poems for us and curtsied, and presented us with flowers.

We were led into the dormitories where we saw the sick children, lying there in their little cots; there were several rows of cots filling the small room. As we passed through the children smiled and stretched their little arms towards us, looking for a little attention, a little love. And then the adults: the men and women were both suffering, but while the men had slipped into sadness and despair, the women seemed to be more resilient, they sang with courage, about wanting to get better and return to their families.

On day 3 we went to “the City of Hope”, a home for “girls at risk”, girls who have been orphaned by aids, abandoned, abused, sold by their parents.

We were shown around and met some of the girls, as well as the teachers, nuns and volunteers. Sister Maria Mazzone, the founder of City of Hope, talked about the financial difficulties of running the home, and the practicalities of dealing with 80 teenagers! The girls seemed shy but they improvised a little show for us. Their singing was lovely – our British pop stars are not half as good. The school also takes in day students and in total the City of hope welcomed so many more than we ever imagined.

Our next visit was to Saint Lawrence Community School, situated just outside one of the poorest “compounds” in Lusaka, the school cares for 1100 boys and girls. We met the inspiring and charismatic Father Oswald, he had a big white smile, and vigorous hand shake. Inside, the classrooms were small but well looked after and lively with about 45 students per class.

When we left, Father Oswald asked if we wanted to see where all the children came from. He took us to the compound: It was a place beyond description, but its images are still so vivid in my mind. We both felt uneasy; we had never seen such degradation. Father Oswald had a kind word for each one of the hundreds of people there, He listened to a grandmother who had to look after so many grandchildren and her legs are not what they used to be…

As we moved from place to place, the ‘shopping list of needs’ simply grew.

Zambia, and indeed, Africa, is a huge problem and we realised that we could not solve the problem alone. All we had the opportunity to do was offer a few little drops into a rather big ocean…but drops that would mean so much.

We came away resolved to help each of the projects that had welcomed us, a little something to help them where they needed it most. At the school in the St Lawrence project, we pledged enough money to pay for a teacher for one year; for Mother Theresa’s orphanage, we would pay for food and for a ‘mami’ for one year; for the City of Hope, likewise; and also for the Project at Kasisi – supplies for their classrooms as well as the staff to help the children to learn.

Already we have been fortunate to be able to start raising the money we pledged. Gordon Hodgson has already cycled along the northern route of the pilgrimage to Santiago in September. He raised £1100 through sponsorship.

We have other events planned that will enable us to reach our little targets.

We were fortunate to welcome Sr Maria Mazzone, the superior of the City of Hope, to Whitchurch in November. Our school gave her £260 for the children of her school when she visited. They raised the money through their October Harvest Cake Sale.

We’re hoping that this page on the website will keep you up to speed on how we are doing, the money we are raising, and keeping you in touch with the projects we are sponsoring.

Keep watching!
