2 october 2011 – Twenty Seventh Sunday of the Year

THIS SUNDAY: Today we focus on the vineyard: frequently we see the vineyard as an image or parable of the Kingdom of God. A vineyard takes a great deal of work, throughout the year; it must be tended, watered, pruned, cared for if there is to be any fruit – there are no quick results with vines. So the financial and labour investments made would create high expectations for a good crop. How heartbreaking when the fruit is as sour as vinegar! So it was with God and his people: he invested immense care and love on them, tending then and giving them what they needed – but the fruit was rotten and sour. What can God do? Hand the vineyard over to some tenants who will bring in a harvest. That is us, the new people of Israel: but what sort of harvest will we produce?

WELCOME to Canon Mattie Hayes who celebrates Mass for us this weekend whilst Fr Christopher is away with the students for the Permanent Diaconate on their retreat weekend. Do make Canon Mattie feel at home.

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL: Keep using the Mass cards that are available. It is good to hear our community growing in its familiarity with the new texts. We persevere… together.
FRIDAY PENANCE AND THE FIRST FRIDAYS OF THE MONTH: Tied in with our Friday witness and penance, each first Friday the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed after the morning Mass until midday giving those who want to the chance to spend a little time in Church, and also allowing us to keep our Church open a little longer than usual. Do make use of this valuable opportunity to deepen prayer before the Lord. This will be followed (each first Friday at 12.15pm) with a very simple soup lunch (homemade soups with bread and cheese) to allow us to tap into that spirit of penance as well as in solidarity with the hungry of our world. Your donations will go to support projects that look after the hungry, the thirsty, and homeless in our own city. So, this coming Friday, there will be exposition after the morning Mass until 12noon and lunch in the hall at 12.15pm. All are welcome for this CAFOD harvest fast day – Friday 7 October.

READERS PREPARATION EVENING: Our readers are invited along to their annual get-together on Tuesday 4 October at 7.00pm here in the Church and the hall. Starting on Tuesday 18 October, Bishop Declan opens the series. The talks take place at the Cathedral and start at 7.30pm. Have a look at the Adult Education and Evangelisation newsletter on the narthex notice board. There is also a poster on the board giving full details. Ahead of the Bishop’s talk there will be chance to explore the first of the documents, Dei Verbum, on Thursday 6 October, at 7.00pm in the Church. Just come along. The two texts are available from cliftondiocese.com.

Our gift to them is our way of sharing from the many good things we have. the second collection will be taken next weekend for CAFOD.

ETHEL LAMOON RIP: Our prayer and sympathy are extended to the family of Ethel Lamoon who died recently at the age of 102. Her funeral service takes place here at St Bernadette’s on Monday at 11.00am. Ethel’s body will be received into Church this Sunday afternoon at 4.30pm. May she rest in peace.

THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: Do make something of this month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. It may be that you take up the challenge of a decade a day during this month, maybe praying for vocations. Each weekday Mass will end with a decade, bringing our parish to the intercession of our Blessed Lady.

DIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL: The members of pastoral councils from parishes across the diocese gather with Bishop Declan this coming Saturday at St Bede’s College, Lawrence Weston from 10.00am, hence the earlier Mass to allow members of our parish forum to go along to represent us.

THIS SUNDAY: “Once a sinner, always a sinner.” That seems to be the attitude of the self-righteous in the first reading and the Gospel; they object that God is unjust, because he gives sinners another chance. But God tells them quite clearly that such attitudes are the real injustice – to allow prejudice and hardness of heart to come between repentance and forgiveness. The words of Christ in the Gospel must have struck a chill into the hard hearts of the so-called righteous chief priests – even today they can make us stop and think: “Prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you.” All our outward show matters little, if it does not correspond with what is deep in our hearts; all our words are meaningless, if they do not correspond with the way we live our lives.

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL: Keep using the Mass cards that are available. It is good to hear our community growing in its familiarity with the new texts. We persevere… together.

11 September 2011 – Twenty fourth Sunday of the Year (A)

THIS SUNDAY: Jesus tells a dramatic story in the Gospel, to make a very important point: the desperate need in our world for forgiveness and reconciliation. How many chances do we give each other ? As many as seven ? How often do we shut doors on people, even family and friends, saying “That’s it; you’ve just gone too far this time: never again”? When Jesus says that we must forgive ‘seventy-seven’ times, he implies that we never stop forgiving, whatever happens. He doesn’t just say this, however: even when they do the worst thing that could be done to him, nailing him to a cross, Jesus puts these words into practice: “Father, forgive them…” As his disciples, we must do likewise.

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL: Mass cards will be used each week to ease us into these new prayers that we pray and we listen to. We’ll also start to get to grips with the music affected by the new translation, too. This is a great opportunity for us to think and reflect upon what we are saying and praying. Please leave the Mass cards behind after Mass so that they can be used again.

ONE YEAR ON EXHIBITION: The stunning images of the papal visit from the papal photographer, Marcin Mazur, are at the Grant Bradley Gallery, Bedminster Parade – Monday to Saturday 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. It’s a wonderful setting to pop into and you can get free parking at Asda behind the gallery. Entrance to the gallery is free and there’s a wonderful café there, too. Exhibition ruins until 1 October.

PAPAL VISIT – ONE YEAR ON: In celebration of the first anniversary of the visit of the Holy Father this September, Ann Widdecombe is coming to St John’s, Bath, to reflect upon the impact and legacy on the historic visit of Pope Benedict last September. Wednesday 21 September at 7.30pm. Pop the date in your diaries and go along. It is set to be a most informative, reflective and interesting evening.

THE NEW MISSAL DONATIONS: The list of names in whose memories the Missals will be inscribed is on the notice board – please check the spelling in case of typos! Thanks for your kindness.

CLOW TRAINING: Sr Jackie Brain is leading a formation morning on 24 September at Christ the King from 10.00am – 12.30pm. Open to all those who are engaged with Children’s Liturgy, it should be a great opportunity for resources and ideas. Please get in touch with Sr Joanna in Filwood Broadway if you intend to go along by 12 September. You can contact Sr Joanna on 0117 966 4854.

FRIDAY FASTING AND PENANCE: Tied in with marking the first anniversary of the Holy Father’s visit last September, our bishops are inviting us to take up, once again, the practice of Friday fasting and abstinence beginning 16 September (this Friday). They are inviting us re-establish the discipline of not eating meat on a Friday as a sign of penance and witness to our faith, giving Fridays back that characteristic of penance so that just as each Sunday gives us a glimpse of Easter, so each Friday give us a glimpse and a reminder of Good Friday and the sacrifice he made out of love for us. This gives us as a national Catholic community a chance to re-capture the opportunity to reflect our faith in life.

FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH: Tied in with our Friday witness and penance, each first Friday the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed after the morning Mass until midday giving those who want to the chance to spend a little time in Church, and also allowing us to keep our Church open a little longer than usual. Do make use of this valuable opportunity to deepen prayer before the Lord.

READERS PREPARATION EVENING: Our readers are invited along to their annual get-together on Tuesday 4 October at 7.00pm here in the Church and the hall. The new translation to the Missal gives us an opportunity to reflect, once again, upon the ministry of reading in Church. All are readers are asked to come along for this hour together.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS: Our ministers of Holy Communion come together for their annual formation session On Wednesday 12 October at 7.30pm – after the evening Mass. We only come together once in the year so please do make a note in your diaries.

CONGRATULATIONS to Angela Russell and Kevin green who were married here this weekend, and to Ellisa Binoy who was baptised here at St Bernadette’s.

PIZZA EXPRESS have kindly given us ‘new’ sturdy seating for our hall from the refit of their Clifton restaurant.

RETIRING COLLECTION: Apologies for the lack of warning and preparation, but this Sunday’s retiring collection is the annual Bishop’s charitable collection. So many charitable causes and individuals approach our bishop and this fund allows him to be generous in his outreach on our behalf. Please be as generous as you can.

7 August 2011 – Nineteenth Sunday of the Year (A)

THIS SUNDAY: How does God reveal himself to us? Most of the time, in precisely the way we do not expect! This is what happened to Elijah: we expect God – all-powerful, almighty – to appear in dramatic effects of nature; but no, God is in a gentle breeze. Similarly in the Gospel: the disciples do not expect Jesus to come towards them walking on the lake – but he does. And when God is revealed in the unexpected, he gives courage and strength: Elijah was afraid when he went to Horeb, but was strengthened by his encounter with God to continue his mission; in the same way the disciples are given courage and faith by the Lord who walks to them on the waters.

FIRST-STAGE-LAST BIKE RIDE: Following on from bike rides in 2007 across Spain and in 2009 through France, Gordon Hodgson intends to cycle from St. Bernadette to Paris, Chartres and Lisieux to complete the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Leaving on 2nd September, Gordon hopes to raise as much sponsorship money as possible for our Outreach projects. Sponsorship forms are available and your support and generosity would be appreciated.

NEXT SUNDAY: we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption. The celebration is transferred to the Sunday from the Monday.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE AUTUMN
THE DIARY OF GOD: There is another chance to pick up this engaging course dipping into deepening our understanding of the scriptures in the autumn. Sacred Heart, Westbury-on-Trym and Chipping Sodbury are hosting the course in November onwards. There is a poster in the narthex for you to peruse and consider. More details and booking forms will follow later.

ONE YEAR ON: In celebration of the first anniversary of the visit of the Holy Father this September, Ann Widdecombe is coming to St John’s, Bath, to reflect upon the impact and legacy on the historic visit of Pope Benedict last September. Wednesday 21 September at 7.30pm. Pop the date in your diaries and go along. It is set to be a most informative, reflective and interesting evening. There will also be a photographic exhibition of some of the stunning images from the papal photographer, Marcin Mazur, at the Grant Bradley Gallery from 3 September to 1 October, Bedminster Parade – Monday to Saturday 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. The gallery are hosting the exhibition for us. It’s a wonderful setting to pop into. Its free and there’s a wonderful café there, too.

Have a look at the Adult Education and Evangelisation newsletter on the narthex notice board. There is also be a poster on the board giving full details

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL: As you know, the English speaking world receives a new translation of the Missal from the autumn of this year. From September, we will begin to use and familiarise ourselves with these new texts. The Mass remains the same, but the words we use and the some of the words we hear will alter. Beginning next month, FrC will make available Mass cards detailing the new texts for the Mass and so we start to familiarise ourselves with these fresh texts. If you would like to order a new Missal – either Sunday or weekday – then you will be able to place an order through the Parish. It seems that the CTS are printing initial copies of both Sunday and Weekday missals (although the weekday includes the Sunday readings and texts as well). £18 for the Sunday missal and £45 for the weekday Missal. The parish does receive a discount on top of that. They are printed to the same high quality spec as the altar missals. If you would like to order one, please add your name to the list in the narthex.

WHAT’S IN A WORD: After gathering and uniting ourselves as a worshipping community by our opening hymn or antiphon, the first word we say is “Amen” in response to the Sign of the Cross. This word is not changing in the New Translation – because it is not actually translated! The word “Amen” is a Hebrew word, showing agreement or confirmation – “So be it”, “It is so”. In the Scriptures we find it in Our Lord’s mouth many times, and it is used in Jewish and Muslim prayer as well as in our own Christian Liturgy. We will say this word at least ten times in Mass – sometimes more. When we use it, what meaning do we put into the word? Or is it just a verbal full stop which does not mean a great deal? Saying “Amen” is all about affirming truth and certainty – crying out “Yes, it’s true”. Think of all the moments in the Mass when you are asked to say “Amen”: you are being asked “Do you believe this? Is this true?” A heartfelt “Amen” proclaims “Yes!”

THE NEW MISSAL: With the new translation comes a new edition of the missal. The Altar one costs £230 and the smaller presider’s missal costs £115. If you would like to contribute towards the cost of the new missal, most especially in memory of someone who has gone before us in faith, please do let FrC have your donation and, if given in memory, make sure you write the name clearly. The donors’ names will be inscribed in the front plate of the missal when they arrive. Donations have started coming in – thank you for your kindness. The Missals, properly inscribed, will be on display before we begin to use them.

FATHER LASZLO KASZA from Romania and who is studying in Rome, is with us again this summer for most of the month of August. He will be supplying for FrC whilst he is away on holiday in the middle of August. We give Fr Laszlo a warm Whitchurch welcome and hope he enjoys being with us once again. Do please make a note of the times during this coming week. Fr Laszlo is at school during the day and will celebrate Mass each weekday evening.

CLOW TRAINING: Sr Jackie Brain is leading a formation morning on 24 September at Christ the King from 10.00am – 12.30pm. Open to all those who are engaged with Children’s Liturgy, it should be a great opportunity for resources and ideas. FrC has more information.

THIS SUNDAY: Divine providence is a wonderful thing: God is so generous with his creation (it is human greed that denies some their rightful share). The Kingdom of God is the time and place when this vision will be fully realised, when all who wish may ‘come to the water’, when all who are hungry may ‘eat as much as they want’, when what is left over is still enough for all the twelve tribes of Israel. Our contemplation of the kingdom of God, through the parables and miracles of Jesus, should stir us up to build this kingdom here and now. The miracle of Divine providence is allowed to work when human greed and selfishness give way to the power of the Spirit working within us, and we share all we have with those in need. Our hearts are set on the kingdom of God, where there is corn and wine and milk in abundance.

CAFOD ~THE CLERGY REVIEW: All the tickets have been reserved for those who have indicated they would like them. Linda and Gordon will need to collect the money for the tickets, please. If you do not intend to make use of the tickets you have asked for, please let Linda or Gordon know as there are others waiting for any cancellations.

SUMMER CREAM TEA: Thank you for your support last Sunday with the afternoon tea in the hall. £190 was raised in that couple of hours. Thanks to those who worked so hard in providing the tea, and thanks to those who came along for the afternoon. That money will be added to our retiring collection for CAFOD.

FIFTY YEARS ON – VATICAN II: Beginning this October our diocese is hosting a series of seven talks/lectures inviting us to re-engage with the teachings and the documents of the Second Vatican Council which began October 1962. Starting on Tuesday 18 October, Bishop Declan opens the series. The talks take place at the Cathedral and start at 7.30pm. Have a look at the Adult Education and Evangelisation newsletter on the narthex notice board.

Over the month of August, the newsletter will begin to prepare us for some of these linguistic changes that will touch us all when we come to Mass week by week and day by day. The new translation timetable suggests that we begin to make use of some of the texts this coming September so that we have a chance to ease in the changes bit by bit. FrC will make available Mass cards detailing the new texts for the Mass. If you would like to order a new Missal – either Sunday or weekday – then you will be able to place an order through the Parish. Change is always challenging. Over the past 37 years we have become very familiar with the words of the Mass – both priests and people alike. Our familiarity with the words means that we will all probably join in without needing to look at Missals and mass sheets. Come September, when the words change, we will all be scrabbling for sheets and guides again! It is inevitable that we will make mistakes – both priests and people will find themselves slipping into the “old words” every now and again. It would be very easy for us to get a little frustrated with this change. Nevertheless we can take change two ways: as something to resent and complain about, or as an opportunity to think about what we are doing. Let’s do our best to accept these changes as an invitation to stop and think about the words we use, and how they touch our minds and hearts.

DIOCESAN WEBSITE: Don’t forget to keep up to date with what’s happening in our diocese via cliftondiocese.com – there’s plenty of news and info.

10 July 2011 – Fifteenth Sunday of the Year (A)

THIS SUNDAY: The Gospel today is the beginning of a new section in Matthew, called ‘The Parabolic Discourse’ – a section of parables Jesus tells the crowd, which we will read over the next three weeks. A parable is a story with a hidden meaning: we can easily remember the story, and gradually the true meaning becomes clearer and clearer. Today is a famous example: the Parable of the Sower. In itself it is a story that would easily be understood by Jesus’ audience – people who lived in an agricultural economy. Jesus uses their understanding to make an important teaching about the message he has brought: it is like a seed that is thrown out and received in different ways – the ideal is when the seed finds good soil, and produces a crop that can be seen and harvested: so the ideal listener to the word is one who allows it to lodge in the heart, but also produces a visible result. What is the harvest we should yield, when we have heard the word?

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL: As you know, the English speaking world receives a new translation of the Missal from the autumn of this year. From September, we will begin to use and familiarise ourselves with these new texts. The Mass remains the same, but the words we use and the some of the words we hear will alter. Over the last month we have been exploring something of the new translation. Some of the music we use at Mass for the Gloria, the Holy, holy, the Memorial Acclamation will be changing. There will be an opportunity to explore some of the new musical settings on Monday 18 July (7.00pm) here in St Bernadette’s as we host an evening for some of our parish musicians and singers. There will be Mass cards detailing the new texts for the Mass from September and there will an opportunity to order new Sunday and weekday missals. Watch this space. There are also some new CTS simple prayer books in the narthex.

GLASTONBURY PILGRIMAGE: Please put a note in your diaries: Sunday 10 July. Full programme and details on the notice board in the narthex. It’s always a great diocesan gathering at the beautiful shrine. Do go along if you can. It would be good if St Bs was represented. Cadge a lift if you know of someone who is going along. It is a wonderful opportunity to take part in this procession around one of the oldest and most significant of Marian shrines in England. We are fortunate to be following in the footsteps of St David and St Patrick, seeking the watchful prayer and protection of the Mother of God.

CAFOD ~THE CLERGY REVIEW: It’s back and it’s on at the Colston Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 30 September. Twenty £10 seats have been reserved for us… and there are about a half dozen left. Please see the notice in the Narthex and add your name to the list if you want a ticket. Transport will be arranged nearer the date. Several of our Clifton Priests are taking part and performing for our entertainment and to raise funds for CAFOD. Get those remaining tickets whilst they are available.

CAFOD EAST AFRICA DROUGHT APPEAL: You will be aware that East Africa is currently experiencing the worst drought in almost 60 years, affecting people in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Eritrea. While great progress has been made in supporting communities to cope with droughts, the scale of this disaster is outstripping all local capacity to act as it comes on the heels of two drought-affected years. The number of people affected is immense, with tens of thousands already on the move in search of water, pasture and food.
Given the gravity of the situation and the urgent need to respond quickly, the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which CAFOD is a member, has decided to launch an appeal and emergency response with immediate effect. As part of this response CAFOD is launching its own £5m appeal so that Catholics can choose to give directly to CAFOD. So much is asked of your finances when you come to Church, but if you can respond to CAFOD’s appeal, please do so as generously as you can. There will be a retiring collection after both Masses this weekend.

SUMMER CREAM TEA: To welcome in the summer holidays and to support CAFOD’s drought appeal in East Africa, there will be a cream tea on Sunday 24 July from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. £3 per place and you are contributing to support so many people hungry, thirsty and displaced from the homeland at this time.

PARISH MAGAZINE: The summer edition of the magazine is out in the narthex. You are most welcome to pick up a copy. They are free and if you want to make a contribution towards printing costs, then please feel free to pop something in with the newspaper money. The magazine is packed with some wonderful articles from parishioners. When you’ve read it, why not pass it on to someone else.

3 July 2011 – Fourteenth Sunday of the Year (A)

THIS SUNDAY: After the joyous Easter cycle leading us into the many feasts that have drawn us through the month of June, we return to Ordinary Time and this fourteenth Sunday of the Year. Today’s Gospel in an answer to a very simple question: who is this Jesus we follow? What is he like? He tells us himself: he is gentle, and humble of heart. There is a simplicity about this Gospel which speaks very clearly to tired hearts. Indeed, it is often the case that we overlook the simplicity of the Gospel message – which is why it is valuable to be as children, constantly wondering and marvelling at the beauty and fascination of Jesus. How much God must love us: the message of salvation is so easy to receive, the promise is so welcome. This is a Sunday to wallow in the wonder of a God who is ‘kind and full of compassion.’

There will be an opportunity to explore some of the new musical settings on Monday 18 July (7.00pm) here in St Bernadette’s as we host an evening for some of our parish musicians and singers, this side of Bristol. There is also a Deanery evening looking at the new translation on Tuesday 5 July beginning at 7.00pm in St Dunstan’s, Keynsham, building upon the four catechetical sessions we have had here during the Easter season.

A BIG ITALIAN THANK YOU: Those who came along to Mass last Tuesday were so appreciative of the fact that Mass was celebrated in Italian…just for them. Thank you to those of you who came along. FrC particularly is grateful to Fr Gerardo Fabrizio for celebrating the Mass. Cardinal de Paolis hopes to be with us after the summer, so watch this space.

ROOTED IN CHRIST: This fantastic series draws to a close as we move to the final session on July 5. Fr Christopher leads the final session looking at The Last Things – a vision of the life to come. If you would like to go and might need a lift, just ask FrC. Holy Family, Patchway, Tuesday 5 July beginning at 7.30pm.

GLASTONBURY PILGRIMAGE: Please put a note in your diaries: Sunday 10 July. Full programme and details on the notice board in the narthex.
CAFOD ~ ACT BIG, THINK SMALL CAMPAIGN: Join CAFOD’s campaign to call on the UK government to transform lives and put the people behind small businesses at the heart of UK aid and policy making. Please see the poster and sign a postcard in the Narthex to Andrew Mitchell MP, the Minister for International Development. He is a good man who needs our support.

CAFOD ~THE CLERGY REVIEW: It’s back and it’s on at the Colston Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 30 September. Several of our Clifton Priests are taking part and performing for our entertainment and to raise funds for CAFOD. Get those tickets whilst they are available.

PETERS’ PENCE: This second collection taken around the Feast of SS Peter and Paul is our gift to the Holy Father. Peter’s Pence is the Church’s global outreach to the many diocese’s, religious institutions, hospitals and schools as well as many disasters that the Holy Father can respond to on our behalf. Peter’s Pence allows him to show compassion, charity and concern to those in need around the world. You are always so kind to the world’s poor – please respond as generously as you can.

PILGRIMAGE TO PUGLIA: If anyone is interested in joining the pilgrimage (12th – 19th September) to Ruvo di Puglia – San Giovanni Rotondo – Bari – Castel del Monte – Trani – Matera, you are invited come to a meeting at St Bernadette’s, Wells Rd, on Monday 4th July at 7.00pm. There will be a video presentation and an opportunity to find out more about the pilgrimage. If you are unable to come to the meeting but are interested, please feel to contact either Maria on 07871205182 or Caroline on 07979353599.

FORUM GROUP meets this coming Thursday at 7.00pm in the presbytery.

He is now at home and on the road to a good recovery.

NEW TRANSLATION SHEETS for readers, ministers of communion, servers, welcomers, and musicians in the narthex.

Thirty Third Sunday of the Year – 14 November – Remembrance Sunday

THIS SUNDAY: As we approach the end of that part of Saint Luke’s Gospel before the Passion narratives, and approach the end of the Church’s year, our thoughts are turned towards the end of time and the Second Coming of the Lord – this will led us into Advent in two weeks time. Saint Luke’s message is very distinctive: the Lord will come, but there is a lot to be lived through first. The coming of the Lord is not going to be a “quick fix” – we will have to live through (and endure) all the mess of human joy and suffering. The Lord is clear too that we have to be aware of the personal cost of belonging to him – think back to last week’s readings, and the stories of religious persecution from every place and every age, even to this day. Even as this sounds gloomy and depressing, it is worth noting where the Gospel passage starts – in the material beauty of the Temple – and where it ends – something far more precious will be saved: our lives.

EXTRA ORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: All our ministers of Holy Communion will be commissioned over this weekend. This will see some of our parish family commissioned for the first time to serve us in this special way. This gives us an opportunity to appreciate the generous service that is shown to us through their ministry. We keep them in our prayers in a special way.

COMMUNION UNDER BOTH KINDS: Our Saturday evening Mass is the only one where communion is not offered from the chalice. From the First Sunday of Advent (27 November) and following the commissioning of ministers of Holy Communion, there will be the opportunity to receive communion from the chalice. To enable this to happen is as respectful and orderly a way possible, we will need to approach the altar from the central part of the church and not from the sides. This will enable the two ministers holding the chalices to stand at the end of the rails and those who want to receive communion from the chalice to present themselves from those side aisles. It should enable a steady flow to and from communion and facilitate an easy reception of communion from the chalice. Please just be aware of these slight adjustments over the next couple of weeks.

SOUNDS OF THE 70’s – PARISH SOCIAL – 27 NOVEMBER: Come and dance the night away to the music of “Erebus“, in a fun night with a fish and chip supper. Search your wardrobes, dig out and dust off those clothes and spend the evening reminiscing to the authentic sounds of the 70′s! Tickets will cost £10 and this will include entertainment through the night by a fantastic live band, as well as your fish and chip supper. Caroline Lovell has more details. Pop your name on this list or pick up a ticket whilst you are at Mass.

FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION: The preparation programme for First Communion 2011 will begin late January. If you have a child in year 3 and feel that they are ready to take this next step in their pilgrimage of faith, then you might think about coming along to a parents’ meeting on Thursday 18 November in the Church at 7.00pm. Do make sure you have the date in your diary ready to come along.

SCHOOL YEAR GROUPS AT MASS: Friday morning Mass will see us joined from time to time by one of the class groups from our primary school. This is not just a prayerful opportunity for them but also a catechetical one, too. It gives them chance to experience the celebration of Mass and to grow in their appreciation and understanding of this treasure in our lives of faith. It would be great if there were folk ready to support them on these Fridays. All are welcome. This coming Friday, we welcome year 5 to Mass.

A CHANGE IN TRANSLATION: As many of you know, the translation of the missal is about to change… and we need to begin to get ready for this change. Although we use the new translation fully from Advent 2011, our preparation will enable us to really think about how we celebrate Mass. There are study days for the people of our parishes to prepare for the new translation across the diocese. The first is at the Cathedral on Saturday 20 November from 10.30am. It would be good if folk from St Bernadette’s we able to be part of the day.

DIARY OF GOD: The course continues this coming Wednesday in our hall after the 7.00pm Mass. Don’t forget to bring your copy of the scriptures with you.

200 CLUB GRAND DRAW WINNERS: £25: Fiona Cox; £50: Martin Harris; £100: Chris Mills; £200: Nick Osborne.

BISHOP DECLAN VISIT ST BERNADETTES: Bishop Declan is coming to celebrate Mass on Wednesday 24 November at 11.00am and he has invited the retired priests of our diocese to come and join him. It would be good if there were folk from the parish to come and join with our bishop making the retired priests welcome.

VESPERS FOR CHRIST THE KING: To bring the liturgical year to a close, we will celebrate sung evening prayer and benediction next Sunday, 21 November, at 4.00pm. This is a wonderful celebration of the church and it would be good if folk could come along.

YOUTH SUNDAY: The final Sunday of the Church’s year is our day of prayer for the young people of the Church. There is an appeal next Sunday being made on behalf of the diocesan youth service. Your gift goes to support the work with our young people across the diocese. It is our young people who benefit from your kindness.

APPEAR IN THE LIGHT: A special event for young people to meet and explore their faith and the season of Advent.
In each week of Advent there will be a series of short reflection evenings for young people in each county within our diocese. The evenings will be a chance to reflect on Advent as a season of preparation and our own faith journeys. The Advent reflections begin here at St Bernadette’s on Monday 29 November from 6.00pm until 9.00pm and all our young people, secondary school age and upwards, are warmly encouraged to come along.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION: The fourth session of preparation takes place on Wednesday December 8 at 6.00pm in the Hall, and January 12. The Bishop will be with us on Thursday 27 January. Our young people have been sent away from this last session to think about choosing a sponsor and a name under which they choose to live as disciples of Christ. Let us keep them in our prayers as they journey towards the Sacrament of Confirmation.

ROOTED IN CHRIST: This fantastic opportunity to deepen our understanding of faith starts up again on Tuesday, 23 November, at Holy Family, Patchway. Gavin D’Costa will gently lead us into a reflection and deeper understanding of the Trinity. It’s free and it’s open to everyone. Do go along.

31st October 2010 – The Feast of All Saints

THIS SUNDAY: “A huge number, impossible to count” – that is the picture this Solemnity creates. In every age there have been men and women who have followed the Lord faithfully, and who now rejoice in the Liturgy of Heaven, as they stand before the throne of the Lamb. These are the “anonymous” saints, whose names we don’t remember but even though their names are not on our lips, their memory, inspiration, example and prayers are set before us today, so that we too can be encouraged in our own “journey of perfection”. What does it take to be a saint? Surely the Gospel that is appointed for today (the Beati¬tudes) shows us that it is in the small things that we triumph: gentleness, mercy, making peace, faithful mourning, purity of heart, poverty in spirit these are not grand, public ways to sanctity. They are domestic, and homely, to be practised and perfected with those closest to us. We sometimes exalt the “named” saints to the degree that we can feel they are distant from us. Today’s feast, as well as celebrating the memory of the many whose name we do not know, also prompts us to see holiness as within our grasp.

MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS: This month of November invites us to keep in our prayers the Holy Souls ~ those who have died and await the call to resurrection. Each day during the week, we remember all who have died at the chapel of our Lady as we commend them to her maternal prayer and intercession. It is our Christian duty and a mark of our love and concern that we keep the dead in our prayers that they may come to enjoy the peace and joy of God’s eternal kingdom. There are two Masses on All Souls day. Whilst not a holyday of obligation, it is, nevertheless, and important one.

VESPERS FOR ALL SAINTS: Sunday 31 October (this Sunday) at 4.00pm we celebrate Evening Prayer on the Feast of All Saints. We seek the prayer and the intercession of the saints for they are our examples of how to live that life of love and fidelity seeking to imitate Christ in all we do. Do come along if you can.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION: The third session of preparation takes place on Wednesday November 10 in the Hall at 6.00pm – then, December 8, and January 12. The Bishop will be with us on Thursday 27 January.

EXTRA ORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: All our ministers of Holy Communion will be commissioned over the weekend of 13 & 14 November. This will see some of our parish family commissioned for the first time to serve us in this special way. This gives us an opportunity to appreciate the generous service that is shown to us through their ministry.

CURRY AND QUIZ NIGHT: All fifty places have been taken which is a fantastic response. Doors open at 7.30pm and there will be ample time for you to settle in and get yourselves a little drink before the quiz starts and the food is served. Tickets cost £5 (great value) which will be taken on the night. Get a team together and swat up during this week. If you find you cannot come along having reserved yourself a place, please don’t just not turn up. Let FrC know and your seat can be re-allocated.

SOUNDS OF THE 70’s – PARISH SOCIAL – 27 NOVEMBER: Come and dance the night away to the music of “Erebus”, in a fun night with a fish and chip supper. Pop your name on this list.

This is an important get together for parents (for you will have a crucial role, this year, in your children’s preparation) and this meeting will be chance for you not only to register your child on the course, but also find out something of your child’s preparation across the six months. If you have questions at this stage, please get in touch with FrC. You might also like to pass the word around just in case someone misses out on the info.

PARISH MAGAZINE: The Autumn edition of our parish magazine is still available from the narthex for you to take away. Thanks to all our contributors. There are some wonderful reflections of how members of our parish community took part in the Papal Visit. Maybe when we have read your copy, pass it on! They are free to take away; it you want to pop something by way of contribution into the paper bowl, then please feel free to do so.

SCHOOL YEAR GROUPS AT MASS: Starting after this half term, each Friday morning Mass will see us joined by one of the class groups from our primary school. This is not just a prayerful opportunity for them but also a catechetical one, too. It gives them chance to experience the celebration of Mass and to grow in their appreciation and understanding of this treasure in our lives of faith. It would be great if there were folk ready to support them on these Fridays. All are welcome. On Friday 5 November, we welcome year 6.

HOLY SOULS MASS: This annual mass at Holy Souls cemetery takes place on Saturday 6 November at 12noon. This is a special opportunity for us to join our bishop and our diocesan family at the start of this month of the Holy Souls.

NIGHT OF LIGHT: Halloween has become the third most commercial celebration after Christmas and Easter. There is an invitation to begin to reclaim this night as the eve of All Hallows (All Saints). We are invited to reflect our faith by placing a candle in our windows to reflect Christ, the Light of the World, and his presence in our hearts and homes. All Hallows reflects our hope in God’s promise, not our fear of ghosts and ghouls – it celebrates the joy of God’s presence not the anxiety and despair of death. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have fun… it just means that the story of faith needs to be correctly told.

DIARY OF GOD: The course picks up again after the half term break this coming Wednesday in our hall after the 7.00pm Mass. Don’t forget to bring your copy of the scriptures with you.

PAPAL VISIT LEGACY: As a real way of allow the Holy Father’s visit to continue to resonate within us, every parish across our countries has been gifted with a framed copy of Holman Hunt’s ‘The Light of the World’ painting a a candle holding the papal visit logo. The gift reminds us of the light of faith that has been entrusted to each of us and the invitation from the Holy Father to allow that light of faith to touch and transform our world. The image and the candle will find a home in the Lady Chapel and will be lit to focus our prayer and reflection around allowing Christ to come into our lives and take root within our hearts, our homes, and our parish. We pray that the light of Christ may touch our own darkness, take away our fear and anxiety, and allows us to walk in the confidence and hope of his presence.

24th October 2010 – Thirtieth Sunday of the Year

THIS SUNDAY: A few weeks ago (22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time) we had a Gospel about humility in social life – today we hear the Lord reiterating the message, but this time in reference to our prayer lives. The two Gospels are linked by the last words today, which also appear in the other story: “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” This phrase is obviously a key part of our Lord’s teaching! The sin of “self-exaltation” consists in putting others in a lower place – as the Pharisee does to the tax collector. Perhaps the most telling phrase in today’s Gospel is where Jesus refers to the Pharisee saying “this prayer to himself,” rather than offering it to God! And since the Pharisee wasn’t talking to God, how could he expect to be heard?

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION: The third session of preparation takes place on Wednesday November 10 in the Hall at 6.00pm – then, December 8, and January 12. The Bishop will be with us on Thursday 27 January.

SCHOOLS OF PRAYER: There is a wonderful opportunity to explore ways of praying this October. Members of different religious communities will explore with us their Order’s particular spirituality – and this next Saturday, the Dominican Sisters will take us on a journey through a Dominican way of praying. Hosted by the nuns at Woodchester Convent, the sessions start at 10.00am and finish at 12.00noon. Do go along if you can – it should be a reflective, prayerful couple of days. Have a look at the poster in the narthex. This final session brings the prayerful month to a close.

EXTRA ORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: All our ministers of Holy Communion will be commissioned over the weekend of 13th & 14th November. It should enable a steady flow to and from communion and facilitate an easy reception of communion from the chalice. Please just be aware of these slight adjustments over the next couple of weeks.

CURRY AND QUIZ NIGHT: A fantastic and fun evening with an authentic curry and mind-teasing questions from our resident quizmaster to draw us together as the autumn looms in. Keep the evening free – Saturday 6th November. There will be a bar as well as a delicious supper and good company, too. Tickets cost £5 (great value) so come along, get a team together, and join in! See notice board for more details. Numbers are limited to fifty places.

SOUNDS OF THE 70’s – PARISH SOCIAL – 27 NOVEMBER: Come and dance the night away to the music of “Erebus”, in a fun night with a fish and chip supper.
ROTAS: The new rotas are out in paper version from the table in the narthex or electronically by looking at www.stbernadettewhitchurch.org Don’t forget to pick up your copy.

NOVEMBER MASS LIST: The Mass list for the month of November can be found on the notice board in the narthex. If you would like a Mass celebrated for your deceased loved ones during the month of the Holy Souls, please use the list to allocate yourself a particular day. One mass intention per day is all that is allowed, so ensure that you chose a ‘free’ slot. It is always helpful if you also write down the name and the date you have requested and give it to FrC.

PARISH MAGAZINE: The Autumn edition of our parish magazine is available from the narthex for you to take away. Thanks to all our contributors.
MISSION MASS: Each autumn Mass is celebrated around our diocese to draw together all those who work to support the APF. We are fortunate as a parish to be in a position to host one of the Masses this year. On Thursday 28 October, the annual Mission Mass will be celebrated here at 7.00pm. Those of you who support the APF through your red boxes, those of your who work to promote and collect contributions are warmly invited to come along. Those of you who know little about the APF and would like to find out more are equally encouraged to come along. Our diocesan Missions Director will be celebrating the Mass and it is a great chance to reflect upon all that is done to reach out to charity and mission. See notice.

THIS SUNDAY is World Mission Sunday and our retiring collection goes to support the work of the APF and the missions. The APF is something that is so generously supported in our parish and many of you contribute towards the work of the missions through you Red Boxes. This week’s collection is our contribution towards the work of the Church on the missions… we remind ourselves that we may not be able to go to the ends of the earth, but we do encourage those who commit themselves to doing just that, bringing the gospel and Christ’s good news to those who have yet to hear it.

VESPERS FOR ALL SAINTS: Sunday 31st October (next Sunday) at 4.00pm we celebrate Evening Prayer on the Feast of All Saints. We seek the prayer and the intercession of the saints for they are our examples of how to live that life of love and fidelity seeking to imitate Christ in all we do. Do come along if you can.

SCHOOL YEAR GROUPS AT MASS: Starting after this half term, each Friday morning Mass will see us joined by one of the class groups from our primary school.
