Jesus falls a second time

Seventh Station

Tired and weary, weakened and frail, Jesus’ humanity bears the load of our human frailty upon his shoulders. Even with the help of Simon it truly is the weight of the world and the weight of sin. Every muscle aches with each and every step. Even though he is sure that this is the only way to walk, he is blinded by sweat and blood, by dust and dirt and the unsure steps he takes along this uneven, cobbled road cause his legs to give way and he falls again.

Maybe it would be easier to stay down, easier just to give up and give in now. How it would be easier if this cup were just to pass him by and how much easier were he to breathe his last lying in the dust of the earth. But he is faithful, and he knows that as he struggles to catch his breath, humanity itself is, in a sense, holding its breath in its need for a Saviour. This is the only way – to rise from the dust and journey onwards. He knows the Father is with him, and his love for us causes him to pick up his cross and keep going.

Lord, there are times when I feel it would be easier to give in and to give up; times when I feel defeated by the things I must live with. Teach me by your own fidelity to know that even when I have a burden, a cross to bear that it is you who will give me the strength to bear it.

I love Thee, Jesus; my love above all things;
I repent with my whole heart of having offended Thee.
Never permit me to separate myself from Thee again.
Grant that I may love Thee always,
and then do with me what Thou wilt.
