With a Song in my Heart

News from our Local Community Choir

by A Singer

Inspired by the TV programme featuring Gareth Malone in which he encouraged the most unlikely people to come together to sing in a choir, a few enthusiastic singers from the local churches floated the idea that we could try a form a community choir. A musical director was sought and found and a date set for the first get together of folks who enjoyed singing.

The first rehearsal was very chaotic – the person bringing the music was late arriving and none of us knew what to expect. However, after a couple of practices we began to get the hang of singing together and started to sound something like a choir. We practised three pieces which we hoped to be able to sing at the Amplius Christmas Concert in December.

We rather nervously made our public debut as a choir on 5 December and nobody walked out so we probably produced a reasonable sound. We all agreed that it is great fun singing together and hoped we could continue to do so.

In February we got together again, this time meeting at Bridge Farm Infants School. We had the idea of doing as concert in April to raise some money for the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. Very ambitiously we have been trying to learn eight seasonal pieces. The concert was planned for 17 April at Bridge Farm Meadow Hall. In May we also hope to sing at a concert in Westbury on Trym in aid of the street children of Guatemala.

This choir is for everyone who enjoys singing. We are all ages and abilities and are voices of every level – some high, some low. Some folk read music, other just follow the tune – but we all enjoy singing and singing together as a group is lovely. So if you enjoy singing come and join in – details are on the notice board.
