Thirty Third Sunday of the Year

Thirty Third Sunday of the Year

15th November 2009 THIS SUNDAY: As always at this time of year, we begin to contemplate the end of the world   a theme that carries us over next Sunday’s feast (Christ the King) and so into Advent. Such a contemplation is not gloomy or morbid: throughout the ages (and especially in the early days) Christians have been utterly posi¬tive about the coming end of all things, because we know what will happen, and in fact we earnestly desire it to come: the phrase that gives this away is in the Gospel: “Then… he will send his angels to gather his chosen from the four winds.” This gathering of God’s children to¬gether will be a truly wonderful event, when we will all be completely enfolded in that love of God that we talk so much about.

Next Sunday, there will be the retiring collection for the Youth Service.

READERS GATHERING: A session for all our readers takes place this coming Saturday, 21st November, from 11.00am (and we should be finished for 1.00pm).  There’s been plenty of warning, so please do make sure that date is in your diaries.  Our readers only come together once a year and so it makes it all the more important that all our readers make use of this opportunity. Doreen Wyatt from the Diocesan Liturgical Department will lead the first part of the morning.

200 CLUB GRAND DRAW:  We are approaching the end of the 200 Club’s year (Dec – Nov). Collette will be contacting all current members inviting them to renew their membership for the next twelve months. The subscription costs £12 for the year and this could reap a harvest through one of the ten £25 monthly draws or a chance of snatching that big prize in one of the two Grand Draws that take place (May & Nov). Half of your subscription goes to support the parish whilst the other half is given out throughout the year in our prizes.  The November Grand Draw will take place during the Fish & Chip Supper and Quiz Night taking place on 5th December (albeit a little delayed) beginning at 7.30pm in the Hall. Do put the dates in your diaries and keep it free. This is an evening for all the family – so the more, the merrier. Renewal notices will be sent out over the next couple of weeks. Please do consider renewing your 200 Club membership. Your contribution and membership is much appreciated and valued. Sign up for the F&C supper on the list in the narthex. £10 a head with reduction for the youngsters.

FIRST COMMUNION 2010: Those parents with children in present year 3 with children due to make their First Communion next June are invited along to a get together on Tuesday 8th December at 6.30pm in the Church. This will be an information and registration meeting, so please do come along if this involves one of your children. This year the children from both St Gerard’s and St Bernadette’s will be prepared together whilst each parish still celebrating First Communion next summer. It is important that your child is represented at that meeting as the programme begins early on in January.

ADVENT 2009: Frighteningly so, it is only four weeks until we begin the season of Advent.  Do think about how you will be marking Advent as a family this year. Advent calendars are available from the Repository.

VESPERS will be celebrated next Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King (22nd Nov) and on the First Sunday of Advent (29th November) at 4.00pm. Do come along if you can.

ADVENT CATECHESIS: As we did in the season of Lent, there will an hour’s catechesis on each of the Advent Sunday’s readings beginning on Wednesday 25th November. The Catechesis will take place in the hall following the 7.00pm Mass. This is a wonderful way of growing in our familiarity with the scriptures as well as preparing to hear the Word of God on the Sunday. All are welcome – please do come along.  (25 Nov; 2 Dec; 9 Dec; 16 Dec; 23 Dec)

ADVENT CONFESSIONS: As well as the usual opportunities on a Saturday, there will be a chance on Tuesday 22nd December from 7.00pm until 8.00pm to make use of the sacrament of Reconciliation. There will be a number of priests available to hear confessions… and a chance to make room for the Lord who comes to dwell in us as we journey towards Christmas. There will also be two priests to hear confessions on Saturday 19th December at 10.45am onwards and 5.00pm onwards. Do make this great Sacrament a real part of your preparations for Christmas.

FAMILY CRIB SERVICE: One again, as part of our preparation for Christmas and our journeying through Advent, our children and families are invited to come together on Sunday 20th December. Children are encouraged to come as one of the nativity characters. The Crib Service begins at 3.30pm with refreshments afterwards in the hall.

NOVEMBER DEANERY REQUIEM MASS: Deanery Requiem Mass – Friday 20th November at 7.30pm at Christ the King, Filwood Broadway. Please do go along if you can.

SCHOOL MISSION: Our Secondary school is having a Mission led by the Sion Community this coming week: 16th – 20th November. There will be a special evening on Thursday 19th to which we are all invited. This is an opportunity for us to reflect upon our own faith and hear, once again, Good news brought to us. Please do go along to this if you can. 7.00pm in the school hall. Also, there is a vacancy for Music coordinator. Details on notice board.

SECONDARY SCHOOL ADMISSIONS: Reminder to parents of children transferring to secondary school in September 2010. Those applicants who have not yet returned forms will shortly receive the school’s ‘faith commitment’ forms to complete if they wish.  Please note the deadline for their return: Monday 30 November 2009 (Form 1, Copy of Baptism / Holy Communion Certificate, Form 2 (if applicable).
