Corpus Christi

7 June 2015 – Corpus Christi

THIS SUNDAY: The key to today’s readings is the word “Covenant”. A Covenant is a solemn and bind¬ing agreement between two parties, which es¬tablishes the way in which each party will behave towards the other. It establishes rights and duties, and forges a new relationship be¬tween two people or groups of people. In the Ancient World, a Covenant was always sealed with a sacrifice and a meal: the sacrifice brought divine blessing on the covenant, and the meal sealed the relationship between the participants. In the Covenant that God forged with his people in the Old Testament, it was expressed very simply: God said, “You will be my people, and I will be your God.” God would remain faithful to the people, and they were to remain faithful to God (this is where the command¬ments come in). This Covenant was sealed in its greatest form on Mount Sinai, as we hear in the first reading. When the Old Covenant had been broken beyond repair, God sent his only Son to estab¬lish a New Covenant: the sacrifice and meal of this New Covenant is Calvary and the Last Supper, where Christ is both priest and victim and altar. When we eat and drink this sacred meal at every Mass we are renewed in the New Covenant and the relationship with God, be¬cause Calvary and the Upper Room are present once more and the New Covenant is sealed for us anew.

VESPERS: Vespers and benediction this Sunday for the Feast of Corpus Christi – 4pm.

FIRST COMMUNION PHOTOGRAPHS: The photographs of Saturday are ready but, as they are so numerous and of such high gig value (you’ll need an 8GB stick) let FrC have a memory stick for him to transfer photos for you. Please just give a call during the week to arrange to come in or hand in a memory stick through the letter box.

AN OPEN CHURCH: It’s good to see that people have been able to come into the Church with open doors. Please do make use of this wonderful opportunity. Just pop into the stillness and the solitude that comes with being in God’s presence.

READERS AND WELCOMERS: FrC is looking for new readers for both Sunday Masses to enhance the existing rotas as well as extra welcomers for both the weekend Masses. If you feel you might like to offer your services to the parish as a reader or welcomer, would you kindly have a word with FrC to take the next step.

PEDALLING PILGRIMAGE: Gordon Hodgson has already set off and is attempting to cycle along the Pyrenees from Perpignan to Lourdes from 31 May to 6 June. He hopes to raise funds for the HCPT and would be grateful for your support. Please remember all pilgrims in your prayers and talk to Gordon or to Maureen Case if you would like to sign up to sponsorship.

PROCLAIM ’15 PRAYER: Loving Father, you so loved the world that you sent us your only Son, that we might believe in him and have eternal life. May we encounter Jesus Christ anew this day and live the Good News with joy. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, help us to “go out to the whole world and proclaim” our faith with confidence. Give us the courage to witness to the Joy of the Gospel by our words and actions. Help our parish to become more welcoming and missionary, so that you may be known and loved by all people. We make this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever, Amen.

CORPUS CHRISTI: We will celebrate and mark this feast with Exposition following the 10.30am morning Mass and ending with benediction after Evening Prayer at 4pm. Do come along if you can – the Church will remain open so pop in during the afternoon.

FR TYRONE MORGAN: Fr Tyrone sadly died so suddenly this last week – a young priest originally from around this part of Bristol. Do keep him and, of course, his family in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

FR KEVIN MORTIMER’S funeral takes place at the Cathedral on Thursday 11 June at 11.00am. May he rest in peace. If you thinking of going up to the cathedral for Fr Kevin’s funeral, just be aware that with the cathedral roof repairs underway, there is now reduced parking at the cathedral and limited on the road parking due to residence parking now in force.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION: On Sunday 7 June there will be a Corpus Christi Procession at Downside Abbey (Stratton on the Fosse, BA3 4RH). The procession will start promptly at 3pm at St Benedict’s Church at the bottom of Abbey Road, and will process from there, through the Abbey Grounds, and into the Abbey Church for Benediction. Refreshments will follow in the Parish Centre at St Benedict’s Church. All are most welcome.

GLASTONBURY PILGRIMAGE: The annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Glastonbury takes place this year on Sunday 12 July. It’s always a great gathering of our diocesan family and wonderful to be in this historic place. The details of the day can be found in the narthex. The procession ends with Mass in the Abbey at 3.30pm. For full details, visit

PARISH FORUM GROUP meets this coming Tuesday following the Evening Mass.
