The whole world rejoices in Mary’s reply

The whole world rejoices in Mary’s reply

You have answered the angel, O Virgin, or rather through the angel, you have answered the Lord.  You have answered with a word and received the Word of God.  You spoke you own word and have conceived the divine Word.

Gabriel the archangel, as suddenly as he came, has returned in haste to God, bearing your generous, gracious response through which we are to be remade in order to be recalled to life.

Adam and his once-sorrowful family thank you, O loving Virgin.  Abraham rejoices.  David dances once more, for behold: the Lord Almighty is now enthroned not between the cherubim on that ark of old but within the ark of your virginal womb.  Indeed David and all the House of Israel dance once more with all their might, singing to the accompaniment of lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets and cymbals.

O blessed Virgin, you are now left alone, yet not alone, for the Lord is with you.  What must you now, O Lady?  Arise, hasten, open.  Arise in faith; hasten to the hill country of Judah; open to your kinswoman Elizabeth the secret of the Word who is life, life within you.

As once on that day of dancing, when David recognised his own unworthiness  – ‘However can the ark of Yahweh come to me?‘ – so too Elizabeth now exclaims in humility, ‘why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?’

And now, O blessed Mother, your children who wait in eager anticipation for the coming of our Saviour, ask that same questions, ‘who am I, that the Lord should come to me?’

Pray, O Virgin undefiled, that we, thy children, may always recognise our unworthiness so that we may be filled with the loving kindness of the heart of our God, who visits us like the dawn from on high.

With thanks – and apologies – to St Bernard!
