Fourth Sunday of Advent

Fourth Sunday of Advent

21 December 2014 – Fourth Sunday of Advent

THIS SUNDAY: Here we enter a new stage of Advent: having spent so much time on the Second Coming, now we look back, to remember the details of the Lord’s First Coming. Today we focus on the character of Mary, and hear of the angel Gabriel being sent to her, to invite her to take her part in the mystery of the Incarnation, ‘the revelation of the mystery kept secret for endless ages’. This mystery springs from the House of David, and so we lead into the Gospel by hearing of the establishing of that house. An interesting idea is that the first reading talks of David wishing to build a house for the Lord; through the prophet he is told not of the house that he would build, but the House which is his line: eventually, in Mary (betrothed to Joseph) the House of David does itself become the house of the Lord, the womb wherein he has a dwelling place.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER COLLECTION brought in £210.05. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity and your support.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CONFESSIONS: There will be opportunity to prepare oneself for Christmas by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 December from 6.30pm until 7.30pm. Do come and ‘get ready’ for Christmas.

BIG CHURCH CLEAN FOR CHRISTMAS takes place on Monday 22 December from 9.45am onwards. It’s a good flick round with duster and hoover ready for our Christmas guests. The more, the merrier. Please come along and lend a hand if you can.

CHRISTMAS MASS TIMES: The little postcard in the narthex is designed so that you can hand them out to family, friends and neighbours just to spread the word! Be bold and take a couple to hand around, drawing folk into the celebration of Christmas here at St Bernadette’s. This is a great witness and often the simple encouragement that some need to come back across our threshold.

CHRISTMAS MASSES: Christmas Eve – 6.30pm and 12.00am; Christmas Day – 8.30am and 10.30am.

BLESSING OF THE BAMBINO: Don’t forget to bring the baby from your crib at home when you come to Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. As they are blessed by placing them in front of the altar, so we pray that the blessing we receive is a blessing we take to our homes and to those we love – that the Christ Child will find a place in our homes and in our lives, too.

VESPERS: This Sunday and next Sunday, the feast of the Holy Family, Evening Prayer is at 4pm. Vespers for New Year’s Eve – 31 December – Evening Prayer and our ‘farewell’ in thanksgiving to 2014 is at 5.00pm in the Church.
