Third Sunday of the Year

27 January 2013 – Third Sunday of the Year

THIS SUNDAY: After our brief excursion last week into Saint John’s Gospel, we are back on track this week with Saint Luke – whom we will follow for the rest of the year. Today is about beginnings: the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. It begins with the Word of God, in the synagogue. Jesus reads from the Old Testament, as we do every Sunday, and tells the people that it is fulfilled in him. Everything that God has said to his people, through his prophets, comes together in Jesus, the Incarnate Word of God. Today is an ideal Sunday to think about the ministry of reader – about how as readers we make present the same fulfillment, Jesus, when we read the word of God in our Churches.

CONFIRMATION: The final session of preparation is on Friday 8 February at 5.00pm in the Church for rehearsal. The bishop is visiting St Bernadette’s for Confirmation on Tuesday 12 February for Mass at 7.00pm. Please do keep the thirty candidates in your prayers: Austin Lovell, Ciara Humphries, Regan Brennan, Ellie May Burge, Faustyna Sikora, Des Talbot, Oliver Tatar, Liya John, Brennan Daly, Millie Hewlett, Niamh Phillips, James Dunsford, Olivia Nicholls, Hanna Lowson, Niamh McGillan, Reece Foley, Harry Jenkins, Samuel Payne, Siobhan McAndrew, Franky Craig, Luke Tatar, Thomas Ryan, Ana Mae Marchant, Lauren Parry, Orla Baber, Ewa Ozuch, Harry Hennessey, Brandon Kirwan, Millie Ryan, and Jack Harding. It is good that we have such a vibrant group of youngsters putting themselves forward for Confirmation.

CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE: Once again the bishop is inviting all married couples to join him for the annual celebration of Marriage in the Cathedral on Saturday 9 February at 12.00noon. If you are celebrating a significant anniversary in 2013, please let FrC know to ensure you receive your personal invitation. It is always a wonderful celebration so please do consider going along – it is open to everyone.

FIRST COMMUNION: Session 2 for the children takes place in the hall Saturday (23 Feb) from 8.45am. Session 2 for the parents is on Tuesday 5 February at 7.00pm.

THIS IS OUR FAITH: The snow meant we had to postpone Fr Healy’s talk as part of our series. Watch this space for the re-scheduled date.

EXPLORING THE COUNCIL: We’ve been shadowing the cathedral series of talks and so we follow the session on Dei Verbum here at St Bernadette’s on Wednesday 20 February at 7.30pm in the hall. This is a great opportunity for us, as a parish community, to engage with the documents. You can find them at the same diocesan web link or on the Vatican website.

LITURGY GROUP MEETING: Re-scheduled meeting on Tuesday 5 February at 7.30pm in the presbytery.

FOR YOUR PRAYERS: John Quirke died suddenly around last weekend aged 44. His funeral will be celebrated here at St Bernadette’s on Monday 28 January at 10.00am followed by burial at Whitchurch Cemetery. We keep his mother and his family in our prayers at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

SCHOOLS OF PRAYER: Have a look at the poster in the narthex. Fantastic series to walk you through Lent, deepening your experience of prayer. The series begins in February and takes us through the Lenten season, deepening and enriching our prayer as we do. Hosted by the Bernardine Sisters at Brownshill.

CELEBRATING THE MYSTERIES – LOOKING AT THE SACRAMENTS: Accompanying our journey through Lent in this Year of Faith, there is a wonderful opportunity not simple to explore our understanding of the Sacraments but more to think about how we live them in our daily lives. Beginning 31 January (this coming Thursday) and hosted by the parish community in Clevedon from 7.30pm until 9pm – a great way to walk through Lent. See poster in Narthex.

RETIRING COLLECTION: This Sunday – Education Sunday – the second collection is taken across the country for the work of the Catholic Education Service. Please give as generously as you can  in support of what happens in our schools.

PASSOVER: Martyn Furman is coming to lead a day in the diocese on the Easter Triduum and the Passover on Saturday 16 March and will be with us in our parish in the evening to help us journey through the Passover celebration and deepen our understanding of what we celebrate not only through Holy Week but each Sunday Eucharist. We will do this within the context of a delicious meal, appropriate for the evening. There will be time to sign up and reserve your space as numbers will be limited and spaces open, eventually, beyond our parish. The reflection day takes place from around 10.30 until mid afternoon, and then the Passover celebration meal will begin at around 7.15pm. It is important that you sign up for the evening, so keep an eye on the board for the list.

MASS OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK: On Sunday 10 February at 3pm there will be a celebration of Mass during which those who are sick and housebound will also have the chance for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. If you can help with transport for that day, please get in touch with Gordon or Linda Hodgson. More details next week… but please put the date in your diaries now. There will be refreshments in the hall afterwards. All are most welcome to this celebration.

OUR CRIB: As we celebrate the fortieth day after Christmas this coming Saturday, we reflect upon the Presentation of the Lord. As we do so, the crib will come down after next Saturday’s Mass. Thank you for your generosity through your crib offerings. A full total of what we have offered to Broadlands will be detailed next weekend.

ASH WEDNESDAY: The start of our season of Lent begins on Wednesday 13 February. There will be to two Masses that day with the distribution of ashes – 9.30am & 7pm. Do try and come along to one of those Masses if you can… just to kick start your Lent this year in a reflective way.

LENTEN WALK WITH ME: Look out for the little reflection books for each day of Lent.

PARISH FORUM GROUP meets on Wednesday 6 February at 7.45pm.
