The Pope’s Missionary Intention

Following on from last week’s reflection on the Holy Father’s general intention for June, let us turn now to his Missionary intention:

“That Christians in Europe may rediscover their true identity and participate with greater enthusiasm in the proclamation of the Gospel”.

What is your true identity?  I could identify myself as wife & mother or as a Catholic, a Scot, a teacher… but what am I, really?  Which of these labels really and truly identifies me?  St Paul writes, ‘true, I am living, here and now, this mortal life; but my real life is the faith I have in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me’ (Gal 2:20).  To find my real identity, I need to look to my life of faith.  Who am I in relation to God?  I am a child of God.  And what does it mean to be a child of God?  St Paul told us the answer in last Sunday’s second reading:

‘ The Spirit himself and our spirit bear united witness that we are children of God.  If we are children, we are heirs as well: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, sharing his sufferings so as to share his glory.’ (Rom 8:1-17)

Wow!  Heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ!  If this is true then surely nothing in this mortal life can be more important than making His Kingdom come?  Nothing more important than to ‘go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.’

So let’s pray, pray, pray… and let’s go!
